What Can You Not Store in a Storage Unit? Important Rules Every Renter Should Know

A helpful guide to prohibited items, storage safety, and making the most of your rental with The Storage Mall.

Self storage is a convenient solution for moving, downsizing, decluttering, and keeping belongings organized. But before you start packing, it's important to understand that not everything belongs in a storage unit.

At The Storage Mall family of properties, we want to help our customers enjoy a safe, convenient, and positive storage experience. Understanding what you can and cannot store is an important part of protecting your belongings and maintaining a welcoming environment for everyone.

Here are some of the most important storage restrictions to keep in mind before moving in.

1. Flammable, Hazardous, and Explosive Materials

For everyone's safety, dangerous and hazardous materials are prohibited from storage units.

Examples include:

  • Gasoline, diesel fuel, and kerosene
  • Propane tanks, including empty canisters
  • Fireworks, explosives, and gunpowder
  • Paint thinners and flammable solvents
  • Toxic chemicals and hazardous substances
  • Fuel containers and certain industrial chemicals

These materials can create serious fire, explosion, environmental, and health hazards.

Storage Tip: If an item contains fuel or has a hazardous-material warning label, check with your facility before storing it. Certain equipment may be permitted with fuel or lubricants remaining only in its operating components, subject to your rental agreement.

2. Lithium Batteries and Battery Charging

Lithium batteries are commonly found in electronics, power tools, scooters, and other everyday devices. However, they can present fire hazards, particularly if damaged or improperly stored.

Under our New York occupancy agreement, storing or charging lithium batteries inside storage units is prohibited.

Storage Tip: Remove prohibited batteries from equipment before storage and keep them in an appropriate location outside the facility.

3. Food, Animal Feed, and Perishable Items

Storage units are not designed to function as pantries or food storage areas.

Items that are prohibited or require specific written approval may include:

  • Fresh and perishable food
  • Canned and packaged food
  • Pet food and animal feed
  • Birdseed and other feed or seed products
  • Refrigerated or frozen groceries

Food and feed can attract insects, rodents, and other pests, potentially affecting neighboring units.

Storage Tip: Check moving boxes, kitchen containers, and outdoor equipment for forgotten food, pet treats, or birdseed before placing them in storage.

4. Firearms, Ammunition, and Weapons

Firearms and ammunition are prohibited under The Storage Mall's New York occupancy agreement.

This includes legally owned firearms and ammunition.

Explosives, fireworks, and other hazardous weapon-related materials are also prohibited.

Storage Tip: Make separate arrangements for firearms and ammunition using appropriate storage methods that comply with applicable laws.

5. Alcohol, Marijuana, and Illegal Substances

Storage units cannot be used to store illegal substances or contraband.

Our New York occupancy agreement also specifically prohibits:

  • Alcohol storage or consumption
  • Marijuana storage, use, or cultivation, including medical marijuana
  • Illegal drugs and contraband
  • Any unlawful activity

These restrictions help maintain a safe and lawful storage environment.

6. Animals and Living Things

Storage units are intended for personal belongings, never for housing animals or people.

Pets and other animals cannot be kept inside a storage unit, even temporarily.

Live plants are also generally unsuitable for storage due to limited light, ventilation, and environmental controls.

Storage Tip: Make appropriate arrangements for pets and plants when moving or traveling.

7. Vehicles, Boats, and Recreational Equipment

Vehicle storage rules depend on the type of space being rented.

Under our New York standard storage-unit agreement, vehicles, including electric vehicles and vessels, cannot be stored inside the rented unit.

However, select Storage Mall properties may offer designated outdoor parking or other specialized vehicle storage options under separate rental terms.

Storage Tip: If you need storage for a car, motorcycle, boat, trailer, or RV, contact your preferred location to ask about designated vehicle storage options.

8. Irreplaceable and High-Value Belongings

Some belongings are too valuable or sentimental to place in a standard storage unit.

Our New York occupancy agreement prohibits storing items such as:

  • Cash and cash equivalents
  • Antiques and artwork
  • Family heirlooms
  • Valuable collectibles
  • Irreplaceable documents and writings
  • Items with special sentimental value

The agreement also establishes a limit on the total value of stored belongings unless prior written permission is obtained.

Storage Tip: Consider a specialized storage solution or secure alternative for irreplaceable belongings. Review your rental agreement and insurance requirements before moving valuable property into storage.

9. Trash, Waste, and Unsanitary Materials

Storage units must be kept clean and sanitary.

Items that create odors, attract pests, leak liquids, or cause unsanitary conditions are not permitted.

Examples include:

  • Household garbage
  • Liquid waste
  • Rotting or decomposing materials
  • Noxious-smelling substances
  • Items that create hazardous or unsanitary conditions

Storage Tip: Clean and completely dry furniture, appliances, and household belongings before placing them in storage.

10. Living, Sleeping, or Operating a Business Inside a Storage Unit

Storage units are for storing belongings, not for living or conducting everyday business operations.

Prohibited activities under our New York occupancy agreement include:

  • Living or sleeping inside a unit
  • Operating a storefront or business from the unit
  • Manufacturing or industrial activities
  • Using the space for performances, rehearsals, or exhibitions
  • Establishing the unit as a legal residential or business address

Businesses may use storage units for permitted belongings such as tools, equipment, and inventory, but operating a business inside the unit is not permitted under the standard New York agreement.

Some facilities offer specialized contractor storage options. Always verify permitted activities with the location before renting.
